About

Portrait of Conrad

Conrad-S makes products for you to love and use every day. Our mission is to bridge the gap between high-end luxury ‘pieces’ and mass-produced consumables. With our whollistic design approach we make thoughtful products that are:

  • functional – do exactly what you need them to do
  • aesthetically refined – look damn good while they do it
  • sustainable – are friendly to the planet
  • accessible – intuitive to use and easy to buy

Whether it’s helping you with your caffeinated morning rituals, sharing the love with mates at meal times or having good looking furniture in your home, we aim to help you keep doing you.

Our Design Philosophy

We describe the way we make and create our products as whollistic. And it can be seen in our core values - we didn’t pick functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and accessibility because we think they look good on an About Page. Each of these values are informed and underpinned by the others.

Holistic Design Graphic - Conrad-S

These aren’t buzz words that we throw around lightly. They are the foundation from which all our ideas grow. Designing quality items that are easy to use, functional and look fantastic, means that you’ll keep them for a long, long time. We’re not into planned obsolescence and overconsumption. We’re about products that you can love and use everyday!

Our Materiality

When Conrad-S started it was a wood-working studio. And although we have grown since that humble beginning, we are still timber people at heart - we love using timber whenever we can.

Workshop Materials

Hardwood and Reclaimed Timber

The reason for this love is how timber wears its heart on its sleeve – you can literally see the trees’ history on its surface. Those knots, twists, cracks and colour variations are all unique reflections of when, where and how the tree grew. At Conrad-S we want to celebrate those unique characteristics, and embed them in our products by using every part of the tree – from roots to branches and everything in between!

Reclaimed timber takes this a step further. The marks it bears tell of it’s growth and past life. It could have been part of a shearer’s shed, pier pylon… Can you tell what your timber used to be?

Sustainably Sourced Veneer Plywood

We also work with this material a lot – its large sheet sizes lends itself to much more unrestrained design. And there is very little waste in its manufacture - imagine a giant vegie-peeler peeling an entire log. Then stack all those thin slices one on top of the other - that's plywood!

Now veneer plywood has a layer of hardwood timber on its top and bottom. So you get the beautiful warmth and character of Australian hardwood without cutting down the whole forest! And sustainably sourced plywood comes from pine plantations – so much better.

Of course we don’t stop there - we are always on the lookout for more sustainable material options. Do you know of any exciting materials out there, let us know!

More About the Designer

I began my design journey at my Melbourne high school. I was drawn to the exciting and creative world of making, spending my lunch times in the school workshop sawing and gluing.

Yearning to further explore the creative world, I studied a Bachelor of Product Design at Parsons in New York City.  Upon graduating  I interned and worked for design companies in both New York and Amsterdam.

After several years away I came back to Australia, working at Kett for three years under the Creative Direction of Justin Hutchinson - designing and developing furniture. Always open to opportunities to broaden my experiences I left to spend some months working in community in North East Arnhem land. Returning from there I knew I was ready to fully launch into my own creative venture and so Conrad-S was born!

From a young age, I have been drawn to the world of creating and making. This passion has taken me around the world and across Australia. Now I am back where my journey began with a passion and belief that all of us can have beautifully designed, functional things in our everyday life.

I love sharing this design journey with you. I’ve kicked off with timber homewares and have plenty of exciting things on the way! Drop me a message and share your thoughts any time - after all, I design for you.

Best,
